www.JasonBuck.com shows you an Incredible California Flood Waters Heavy Rain In Palos Verdes Pipe Collapse. On Thursday February 1st heavy rain slammed into the California Coastline and unleashed roughly 3 to 4 inches of rain in a few hours in Palos Verdes.
By 8:30am there was extreme flooding in parts of PV with one home getting flooded with inches of water inside the home. A drain pipe collapsed in the PT Vicente area. The pipe collects water along Crest Rd and then comes down the hill to Via Rivera before going further downhill on Via Victoria before exiting onto a main water swail behind Berry HIll. The drain pipe at the bottom of the hill collapsed and then pushed dirt up 20 feet from underground and over a wall into the backyard of a property. The waters collected in the yard and in some places were nearly 4 feet high against the wall before knocking down a retaining wall and exiting down the street. There was damage to the interior of the home. Public works was quick to respond and spent the entire day on Saturday to remove some tree roots and debris from the cavity in preparation of the next storm. I was very pleased with their response and the efforts to protect the neighbor home. Further down the road, the exterior swale behind Berry Hill was clogged at the intersection of Palos Verdes Dr West and flooded the street with nearly 4 feet of water. Some cars were stuck in the high waters. Another clog occurred at the Lunada Canyon and came over the road to wash down Paseo Lunado. Lots of mud and debris was flowing down the street and some homes were damaged. Its very important that homeowners check their yard and exterior swales to keep them free of roots, tree's, or debris. If left unattended they could flow down to the next drain and then clog causing erosion or worse. Another important measure is to control the water around the perimeter of the property. Rain Gutters are a critical component to collect and displace the water to a drain and keep it away from the foundation of the home. Many homes have exposed dirt near the home which would allow for water to penetrate through the walls and into the home. Its a good idea to slope the dirt or replace with another material to keep water away from the house.
